DIAA Board of Directors' Update - January 21, 2021

DIAA Board of Directors Update - January 21, 2021

(Dover, DE) January 27, 2021 – The DIAA Board of Directors met last Thursday, and topics of discussion included an update from Division of Public Health (DPH), Rules and Regulations committee update, Football Realignment update, and spring sports.

Dana Carr, DPH representative, emphasized the importance of risk mitigation strategies including wearing face coverings properly and adequate social distancing for all our Delaware student athletes and DIAA teams.  DIAA will continue to work with DPH to determine whether DIAA winter sport tournament events, which are scheduled to begin on February 26, 2021, can occur.  DIAA sports teams should be reminded that any athletes who travel outside of the state of Delaware to play in a multi-team tournament must self-quarantine in accordance with DPH guidance.

Rules and Regulations Committee Chair Dr. Matthew Donovan presented to the Board of Directors that much progress has been made to develop the coaching out-of-season regulation.  The Rules and Regulations Committee recommended changing the regulation to allow school coaches to coach their student athletes on non-school based teams, except during dead periods.  The recommended changes to the coaching out-of-season regulation will be an item again on the Board's next regular meeting agenda.

The Delaware Association of Athletic Directors' (DAAD) Football Reclassification Sub-Committee presented an update to the Board of Directors on the football realignment proposal.  According to the DAAD sub-committee, the proposal’s main goal is safety, level competition, and better overall play.  Past year’s win/loss records and school enrollment were data points that the DAAD sub-committee used to classify schools into districts.  More data will be collected by DAAD Football Sub-Committee and considered by the Board in the upcoming weeks.  This item is expected to remain on the agenda for next month’s Board of Directors meeting.

The Return to Play Wrestling Modifications were also approved by the Board of Directors and the guidance document can be found here.

Spring sports are scheduled to begin practice on March 1st.  Because spring sports are expected to have a full season, at this time there have not been any changes to the game maximums.
