Delaware a national leader in career pathways, case study finds
When it comes to career and technical education and preparing young people for life after high school, Delaware is emerging as a national and international leader, according to “Propelling College and Career Success: The Role of Strategic Partnerships in Scaling Delaware Pathways,” a case study just released by Jobs for the Future (JFF). The case study is part of a larger series, supported by a gift from the James and Judith K. Dimon Foundation to Harvard University, examining how states and regions are preparing tomorrow’s workforce and highlighting promising practices that can inform other college and career readiness efforts around the country.

Free college applications, more offered during Delaware's College Application Month
Delaware high school students can apply to select colleges and universities for free in October and November in celebration of the state's fifth annual College Application Month, which began this week and runs through Nov. 17. Application fees to all Delaware colleges and universities as well as Cabrini University in Radnor, Pa., are waived during the two months. Application fees to Salisbury University in Salisbury, Md., are waived through the end of October. Application fee waivers for additional schools also are available for income-qualified students.

Delaware sees increases in AP participation, performance
More Delaware public school students are taking and excelling in Advanced Placement courses. New data from the College Board, which administers the tests for the courses that can earn students college credits while in high school, shows that in the past decade Delaware has steadily increased both student participation and performance. The total number of Delaware public school test takers increased by 4.7 percent between 2016 and 2017. Meanwhile, the number of students scoring at least a 3 – the score considered “qualified” by College Board – on the 5-point scale also continued to climb, increasing 6.3 percent between 2016 and 2017.

Sussex Tech teacher named Delaware's 2018 Teacher of the Year
A high school English teacher from the Sussex Technical School District is Delaware’s 2018 State Teacher of the Year. Virginia Forcucci becomes Delaware’s nominee in national competition.

Top mathematics, science teachers recognized
Seven Delaware teachers have been named finalists for the highest recognition that K-12 mathematics and science teachers can receive for outstanding teaching in the United States. These finalists will be honored at a banquet in Dover on November 9, alongside the state’s Lifetime Achievement Award winners, who will be named at the event.

Delaware 2018 Teacher of the Year to be named
One of 20 outstanding public school teachers from across the state will be named Delaware’s 2018 Teacher of the Year a week from tonight. Selected from among the more than 9,000 public school teachers in the state, the nominees each represent one of the state’s 19 school districts and network of charter schools. Governor John Carney will announce the winner at the annual awards banquet on Tuesday, Oct. 17 at the Dover Downs Hotel and Casino in Dover. Funding for the award ceremony is made in part by a grant from Voya Financial.

Delaware Report Card seeks feedback to help families access more meaningful education data
The Delaware Department of Education (DDOE) is hosting Community Conversations in October to gain feedback on the elements, priorities, and common terminology it plans to include on its upcoming Report Card website. Delaware's Report Card will refine how DDOE communicates with families and the community its progress, performance, and programs in Delaware education, and replaces the state's current School Profiles site for accessing education data.

Public invited to Community Conversations to review draft anti-discrimination regulation and model policy
In July Governor John Carney sent a memorandum to Education Secretary Susan Bunting asking the Delaware Department of Education (DDOE) to help oversee the creation of a regulation and model policy for districts and charters to follow as they address potential discrimination in Delaware schools. The public is invited to provide feedback on these drafts at a series of Community Conversations. The first event was held last night at Howard High School in Wilmington.
