How do I become a driver/aide?

How many students can ride a school bus?
School buses have a capacity of 16 to 84 passengers. The majority of the buses used in the state are rated for 72-passengers. State regulations would then allow a 72-passenger bus to carry up to 72 students in grades K-6 and up to 48 passengers for grades 7 to 12.

How is a student eligible for school bus transportation?
Students are eligible for transportation if they meet the following criteria:
• Student’s home address is assigned to the school they are enrolled;
• The student is in grades K - 6 and they live more than one mile from the school;
• Or the student is in grade 7 - 12 and they live more than two miles from the school.
• A student that has transportation as a related service will receive transportation services -
Whom would I contact if I have questions or concerns about school bus transportation in my district?
Each school district/charter school has an individual who is responsible for all aspects of school bus operations and procedures within their respective district or charter school.

Are school buses air-conditioned?
Some buses are climate controlled for student(s) that meet specific requirements.

Is there a time limit on how long students ride a school bus?
Each district has their own procedures based upon the needs of the students, school locations and the size of the districts. Vocational schools, special schools with countywide programs and some charter schools do not have set attendance areas and these students may have a longer bus ride.

Can parents volunteer to ride as an aide on their child’s school bus?
Only individuals that have completed the Department of Education aide training and are employed by a contractor, district or charter school can serve as school bus aides.
