Needs identified and addressed through Race to the Top: Special education students’ performance in reading at all grade levels and math at secondary grade levels; low income students’ performance in reading and math at the secondary grade levels
Major initiatives and investments:
- Increases in the number of AP programs, the number of students in AP, and the number of students taking and passing AP exams
- Support for those taking advanced coursework via in-school assistance and after school support sessions, including summer programming
- Establishment of AVID programs at both Millsboro Middle and Georgetown Middle schools
- Implementation of an International Baccalaureate Program at Sussex Central
- Creation of a STEM Program at Indian River High; its feeder, Selbyville Middle, will offer pre-STEM coursework to facilitate student success at the high school
- Expanded career pathways to enhance employment opportunities for graduates
- A special education instructional coach to work directly with special educators
- Hiring of teacher leaders to be placed in lowest-performing schools to serve as instructional coaches
Other innovations within the plan:
- Project V.I.L.L.A.G.E. class in the central part of the district
- Parent Education Center
- Reimbursement for the cost of AP tests for students who earn a qualifying score
