• The number of full-time classroom teachers in the State of Delaware increased by 1.7 percent from 7,748 in 2003-04 to 7,878 in 2004-05. (Table 2)

Salary

Average salaries for classroom teachers increased from $49,660 in October 2003 to $51,255 in October 2004, representing an increase of 3.2 percent. (Table 8)

Race

The percentage of minority classroom teachers, for the State of Delaware, decreased by .4 percentage points, from 13.1 to 12.7 percent over the previous year. (Table 1)

• New Castle County minority teachers declined by .2 percentage points from 15.7 to 15.5 percent. (Table 20)
• Kent County minority teachers declined by 4 percentage points from 12.2 to 11.8 percent. (Table 24)
• Sussex County minority teachers increased by .2 percentage points from 6.3 to 6.5 percent. (Table 28)

The typical classroom teacher in Delaware public schools is 41 years of age with 12.7 years of experience. The typical administrator in Delaware public schools is 47.5 years of age with 19.8 years of educational experience. (Table 7)

Educational Level

• 2092 hold only the bachelor's degree.
• 1604 have completed either 15 or 30 hours of graduate work toward a master's degree.
• 4014 hold the master's degree or greater.

Pupil/Teacher Ratio

The average pupil-teacher ratio for regular elementary and secondary pupils is 16.8 for all Delaware public schools, 17.2 in New Castle County, 16.9 in Kent County, and 15.6 in Sussex County. (Table 5)
