Position Classifications and Types of Employees

  • The number of full-time classroom teachers in the State of Delaware increased by .8 percent from 7,687 in 2002-03 to 7,748 in 2003-04. (Table 2)
  • The number of full-time professional employees of the public schools of Delaware increased by 1.3 percent from 1,818 in 2002-03 to 1,843 in 2003-04. (Table 2)
  • The number of full-time skilled and service workers increased by 3.3 percent from 4,837 in 2002-03 to 4,995 in 2003-2004. (Table 2)

Salary

Average salaries for classroom teachers increased from $49,221in October 2002 to $49,660 in October 2004, representing an increase of .1 percent. (Table 8)

Race

The percentage of minority classroom teachers for the State of Delaware decreased by .37 percentage points from 13.47 to 13.10 percent over the previous year. (Table 1)

  • New Castle County minority teachers declined by .6 percentage points from 16.3 to 15.7 percent. (Table 20)
  • Kent County minority teachers declined by 4 percentage points from 12.6 to 12.2 percent. (Table 24)
  • Sussex County minority teachers remained steady at 6.3 percent. (Table 28)

Gender

The percentage of male classroom teachers in October 2004 declined by .5 percent from 25.2 percent to 24.7 percent. (Table 1)

Age/Experience

The typical classroom teacher in Delaware public schools is 41 years of age with 13 years of experience. The typical administrator in Delaware public schools is 48 years of age with 21 years of educational experience.

Of the 7720 full-time teachers: (Table 7)

  • 2003 hold only a bachelor's degree.
  • 1701 have completed either 15 or 30 hours of graduate work toward a master's degree.
  • 3961 hold the master's degree or greater.

Pupil/Teacher Ratio

The average pupil-teacher ratio for regular elementary and secondary pupils is 16.9 for all Delaware public schools, 17.2 in New Castle County, 16.7 in Kent County, and 16.3 in Sussex County. (Table 5)
