State Action for Education Leadership (SAELP) Website Unveiled
Site Will Provide Educators with Valuable Information on School Leadership
Dover, Del.–January 19, 2006Delaware’s Department of Education (DOE) today unveiled the State Action for Education Leadership Project (SAELP) website at the monthly State Board of Education meeting in Dover. Jacquelyn O. Wilson, Ed.D., Project Director for Delaware’s SAELP and Assistant Director of the Delaware Academy for School Leadership at the University of Delaware, provided state board members with an overview of the newly developed website that has been under construction for six months.
The SAELP website was developed to provide Delaware educators and policymakers accurate and current information about school leadership—both within the state and nationally. Delaware is one of 24 states engaged in work with the Wallace Foundation and five national partners that include: the National Governor’s Association; Council for Chief State School Officers; Education Commission of the States; National Council Of State Legislators; and the National Association for State Boards of Education. The focus of the work is to significantly improve student achievement by strengthening the preparation and performance of education leaders, and by promoting policies and practices that improve the conditions for their success at all levels: school, district and state.
DOE was awarded $900,000 over a six year period to make legislative, regulatory and budgetary changes aimed at ensuring that districts throughout the state can develop, prepare, retain and create the conditions for their leaders to improve student performance; and to support high-need districts in an effort to test a variety of strategies aimed at improving the training of leaders and creating working conditions that allow them to succeed.
Visitors to the website will find information related to two projects that are currently taking place in pilot districts in Delaware—Succession Planning and Distributed Leadership. There is also information about the Aspiring School Leadership Program for teachers who are interested in becoming assistant principals. There is also current information regarding the pilot of the Delaware Performance Appraisal System (DPAS II) and upcoming professional development activities available to both practicing and aspiring school leaders.
“This website will be a valuable resource to school leaders in Delaware who will now have one location to go for information,” said Dr. Wilson. “If a principal in Christina School District is doing work related to developing teacher leaders, he or she can share that information with a principal in the Indian River School District by posting it on the website.” Added Dr. Wilson, “A district that does not have available staff to design a succession plan can read about the work another school district is doing and replicate their plan.”
Secretary of Education Valerie A. Woodruff agreed. “This is yet another great opportunity for us to share valuable resources statewide. The SAELP website will provide important and timely information for educators to help be successful school leaders.”
