Students Chosen for National Youth Science Camp Will Represent Delaware at Four-Week Forum
Dover, Del. - May 14, 2004 Li Bian, a senior at the Charter School of Wilmington and Rachel Desmond Torres, also a senior at Smyrna High School have been selected as Delaware's representatives to the 2004 National Youth Science Camp (NYSC). At the invitation of Governor Bob Wise of West Virginia, both Li and Rachel will participate as delegates in the 40th session of the National Youth Science Camp® held near the National Radio Astronomy Observatory at Green Bank, West Virginia. The NYSC is a four-week forum that will begin on June 24th and will end on July 19th. The National Youth Science Foundation®, based in Charleston, West Virginia, covers all delegate expenses, including travel.
Established in 1963 as a part of West Virginia's Centennial Celebration, the National Youth Science Camp annually provides for 102 student delegates-two from each state and the District of Columbia-a four-week summer forum where delegates exchange ideas with leading scientists and other professionals from academic and corporate worlds. Lectures and hands-on research projects are presented by scientists from across the United States who work on some of the most provocative topics in science today: fractal geometry, the human genome project, global climate change, history of the universe, the fate of rain forests, and robotics. Delegates to the NYSC are challenged to explore new areas in the biological and physical sciences, art, and music with resident staff members. Delegates also present seminars covering their own areas of research and interest.
The National Youth Science Camp's academic program is complemented by an outdoor recreation program, which takes advantage of the camp's location in the Monongahela National Forest. The outdoor program offers backpacking, caving, rock climbing, mountain biking and kayaking.
