Menu Planning Systems
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has provided four Menu Planning Systems to meet nutrient standards as outlined in the School Meals Initiative for Healthy Children. Each School district must select one or more Menu Planning System(s) for use in the Child Nutrition Programs.
Menu Planning System Definitions
- Traditional Meal Patterns - This option requires that the menus served meet the nutrient standards as well as the patterns, but does not require the nutrient analysis of the menus be performed at the local level. The traditional offer versus serve procedures is used with this option.
- Enhanced Food Based Menus - Same as traditional, but the quantities of the fruit/vegetable and grain/bread components are increased. This option requires that the menus served meet the nutrient standards as well as the patterns but does not require that nutrient analysis of the menus be performed at the local level. The traditional offer versus serve procedures is used with this option.
- NuMenus - Based on the nutrient content of the meal. The district (LEA) is required to conduct a nutrient analysis of the menus; offer at least one entrée, one side dish and milk; and must (if they choose to implement offer versus serve) cause students to select an entrée and at least one other time and decline no more than two if the meal is to be claimed for reimbursement.
- Assisted NuMenus - Same as NuMenus expect an outside entity conducts the nutrient analysis of the menus.
