Eligibility Requirements:

  • High school seniors or returning/continuing college students whose parent, grandparent, or legal guardian is employed by any company located at the Port of Wilmington, and is a member of the Port of Wilmington Maritime Society, that has contributed a minimum of $500 towards the Port of Wilmington Maritime Society Scholarship Funds.
  • Must enroll in a two- or four-year program of study at an accredited college.
  • Must file Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) prior to the application deadline.

Award:

  • $2,500 for one year.
  • Award recipients may reapply annually.

Criteria:

  • 50% Financial need
  • 45% Academic performance, to include GPA (25%), SATs (15%), and essay (5%)
  • 5% School or community involvement and leadership ability

Deadlines:

  • All application materials must be received by 4:30 p.m. on April 18, 2013.
  • Applicants must file the FAFSA prior to the deadline for the application.

Application:
Delaware residents:
You can apply for the 2013-14 Port of Wilmington Maritime Society's Dennis Latina Scholarship beginning December 3, 2012, at the Delaware Higher Education Office's secure Student Account Access site at https://dheo.doe.k12.de.us/dhec_student/login.aspx. First-time users must establish an account and provide a valid email and mailing address before proceeding to the application. Incomplete applications cannot be processed. You must provide all of the required information:

  1. Completed application, including activities.
  2. Essay of at least 500 words. Essays of less than 500 words will be disqualified.
  3. If you are a high school senior, or have less than 12 college credits, your High School Academic Record Report and Transcript Request Form and high school transcript must be submitted directly from your high school to the Delaware Higher Education Office. Students are responsible for ensuring that their school provides these forms by the deadline.
  4. If you have 12 or more college credits, your College Grade Release must be submitted directly from your college to the Delaware Higher Education Office.  Students are responsible for ensuring that their school provides these forms by the deadline.
  5. FAFSA filed prior to the deadline.

Non-Delaware residents:
To apply, please download a copy of the application, and one of the following:

  1. If you are a high school senior, or have less than 12 college credits, your High School Academic Record Report and Transcript Request Form and high school transcript must be submitted directly from your high school to the Delaware Higher Education Office. Students are responsible for ensuring that their school provides these forms by the deadline.
  2. If you have 12 or more college credits, your College Grade Release must be submitted directly from your college to the Delaware Higher Education Office. Students are responsible for ensuring that their school provides these forms by the deadline.

In addition, you must send a copy of your Student Aid Report that you will receive after filing the FAFSA.
