Governor's Education Grant for Unemployed Workers

Funded by the Delaware Economic Development Office (DEDO) and administered by the Delaware Higher Education Commission (DHEC)

The Governor’s Education Grant for Unemployed Workers is designed to assist those individuals who have lost their jobs due to the current economic climate and have been unsuccessful in obtaining employment within their current career field/occupation. It helps qualified individuals with training costs associated with learning a new skill or upgrading their current one. In order to qualify, you must be:

  1. Unemployed and actively seeking employment for a minimum of 90 days within the period of January 2009 – December 2010.
  2. Registered with the Department of Labor – Division of Employment and Training (DET).
  3. Recommended by a DET Career Counselor.
  4. Ineligible for Department of Labor’s Dislocated Worker Training Program.
  5. A high school graduate or GED recipient.

Grant Amount:
The maximum Governor's Education Grant for Unemployed Workers for one year (July 1 through June 30) is $2,000.

Schools accepting the Governor's Education Grant for Unemployed Workers are limited to Delaware-based institutions indicating agreement with the following payment schedule:

Governor's Education Grant for Unemployed Workers: 80% tuition & fees, up to $2000/year 
Participating school: 10% tuition & fees
Employee: 10% tuition & fees

Enrollment requirements:

  1. You must attend a participating Delaware Adult Education Center or college (see above).
  2. If you take courses using grant funds, you must agree to allow the school to release grade and progress information to the Delaware Higher Education Commission. Academic progress is monitored and may impact future eligibility.
Deadline:
All application materials must be received by the end of the free drop/add period each term. Grants are nonrenewable. A separate application is required for each term.

Application:

  • You must register with the Department of Labor - Division of Employment and Training (DET) and be recommended by a DET counselor before applying for the Governor's Education Grant for Unemployed Workers.
  • DET must complete the Pre-Qualification Memo and return it to the Delaware Higher Education Commission before you can be considered for the grant.
