Steps for Initial Cycle - New Teachers
During the first few weeks of school your mentor will be helping you to become familiar with your school/district/state educational procedures, policies, and requirements. He/she will help assure that your have completed the certification process and understand what you will need to do to verify that you are “highly qualified.” He/she will introduce you to other staff members and assist you with securing the resources that you may need to set up your classes and be effective in your new position.
Some of the things that they may assist with are as follows:
- Familiarizing you with school, district, and state policies and procedures
- Securing materials such as supplies, curricular guides, and other things that you find that you will need
- Seeing that you have the appropriate technology, books, and professional materials
- Discussing specific guidelines, responsibilities, and events that are unique to your building
- Identifying locations in the school that you will need to know- library, cafeteria, playground, and others
- Assuring that you understand the emergency policies and procedures
- Others needs identified by you or the site
Ask questions, get clarifications, and ask for assistance when needed. The purpose of the program is not only to help you professionally, but to assure that you have the support that you need to be successful.
THE FORM: The mentoring program form provides a suggested list of people that you may want to get to know during the first few weeks of school. The list includes people who are responsible for providing services for you and for the students. The form provides spaces for indicating the person’s name and contact information. You may or may not complete all of the entries and you may add some that are unique to the site. The concept is that you would have the important information completed and in your grade book to access when and if needed.
