Stafford Loan Forgiveness Program

Stafford Loan Forgiveness Program for Teachers

The Federal Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program is intended to encourage individuals to enter and continue in the teaching profession. Under this program, individuals who teach full time for five consecutive, complete academic years in certain elementary and secondary schools that serve low-income families and meet other qualifications may be eligible for forgiveness.

Teachers interested in pursuing the loan forgiveness program are encouraged to visit the Stafford Loan Forgiveness Program website for more information and an application.

The official list of schools designated annually as low-income (greater than 30% poverty according to the loan forgiveness program criteria) can be found at the following link: Annual Directory of Designated Low-Income Schools for Teacher Cancellation Benefits. It should be noted that the Title I status of the school is NOT an eligibility criterion. This list is updated by the Delaware Department of Education no later than December 1 and April 1 annually.
