Resources for Schools and LEAs Under School Improvement

Background Information:

The goal of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) is to ensure that all children are proficient in reading and math by the 2013-2014 school year, and that they continue to progress in the other content areas (science and social studies) as well as in high school completion (graduation rates). In order to accomplish this, states are required to set performance targets in these areas. In addition, targets are set for student populations, and in Delaware, schools must address the needs of all students, as well as students who are African American, American Indian, Asian, Caucasian, Hispanic, English Language Learners, those needing Special Education Services, and from low socio-economic families.  Schools or districts that fall short of these targets for two consecutive years are designated as "under/in need of improvement" (SI) and are required to institute changes so that all students receive adequate and appropriate instruction.
