Private Insurance

  1. Have parent or guardian call the customer service or member services number listed on the insurance card.
  2. Have parent ask for a list of mental health providers that treat children.
  3. After receiving the list of providers
    1. Have parent contact the providers to be sure they accept the insurance you have.
    2. Make sure the provider specializes in children and can address the kind of problems, symptoms, and behaviors your child has displayed.
  4. Have parent schedule an appointment with the provider that seems to be the best.

  2. Have parent look for providers that specialize in Behavioral Health.

Medicaid Insurance

  1. Have the parent contact The Division of Child Mental Health (1302-633-2571) and they will give a list of providers that accept children with Medicaid, No Insurance, Private Insurance Exhaustion, or Court-Ordered Treatment.

No Insurance

  1. Have parent contact the Division of Child Mental Health Services intake line at 1(302) 633-2571 from the hours of 8:00 a.m. to 4:30p.m.  They will give a list of providers that accept children with Medicaid, No Insurance, Private Insurance Exhaustion, or Court-Ordered Treatment.

The Division of Child Mental Health will discuss your concern, determine what steps might be helpful, and provide information about outpatient providers where you may schedule an appointment if outpatient treatment is appropriate.

  1. If child has been diagnosed with an Axis I clinical syndrome, the parent may apply for Disabled Child Medicaid, even if they have private insurance. This will allow Medicaid to act as a secondary insurer. The phone number is 368-6610 x210, or you can call Medicaid at 577-2174 and ask for Disabled Child’s Medicaid information.
  2. If parent is employed but parent’s income is low and parent has no health insurance encourage or assist parent in applying for insurance through the Delaware Healthy Children Program at 1-800-372-2022 (Division of Social Services); press “0” for the operator.
