R.L. Hughes is a Deputy Principal Assistant for the Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security. In this role, he provides policy advice regarding law enforcement administration and practical project implementation strategies. Prior to his appointment with the Delaware Department of Safety and Homeland Security, he served as a Delaware State Trooper, retiring in July 2009 at the rank of Major.
R.L. also served on the Indian River School Board from 2006 to 2012. During his tenure with the school board he served as Vice President of the board, chairperson of the Finance Committee, a member of the Building and Grounds and Comprehensive School Safety Committees.
A graduate of Sussex Central High School, R.L. holds a Master of Science in Public Administration from Wilmington University and a B.S. from the University of Delaware. R.L and his wife, Stephanie, a teacher at East Millsboro Elementary School, live in Millsboro. Their daughters, Julie and Katie, are graduates of Sussex Central High School and are currently attending the University of Delaware and Salisbury University respectively.
