Dr. James L. Wilson

Dr. Wilson has worked as a teacher, principal, project manager and superintendent in several educational environments, both in the states and overseas.  His career has spanned several years in a variety of programs varying significantly in wealth, ethnic composition and size.   His articles and speeches on setting and attaining goals have been distributed by the U.S. Department of Education and the Education Commission of the States.  The School Administrator has also published his articles, “Rebuilding the Ladder of Success” and “Should We Fear or Favor National Assessments.”

While superintendent of the Cape Henlopen School District for eleven years, the district moved from average in academic achievement to number one in the state. The district, students and staff received several state and national recognitions and on three occasions were invited to the White House for award presentations.  Dr. Wilson is a recipient of the AASA State Superintendent of the Year Award for Delaware and has been honored with the State Superintendent’s Merit Award, the DuPont MERIT Award , the State Board’s “Order of Excellence,” and others.  He has served as president of the Delaware Chief School Officers, Delaware School Principals, and Phi Delta Kappa and has been on the board of several civic and non-profit organizations.

Overseas, Dr. Wilson served as Superintendent of Schools in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. He was also a consultant for International School Services and in that role lead the planning for the development of a new American international school in Qatar.   As a consultant In Delaware he coordinated the development of the Delaware State Department of Education’s Charter School Guidebook, conducted workshops for state agencies and the public and was a lead consultant for planning and developing board policies for the Sussex Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Dr. Wilson’s basic philosophy is people/student centered and results oriented and he firmly believes that quality interaction has to be an integral and ongoing part of any organization’s or individual’s life.

Dr. Wilson was appointed to the State Board of Education in June 2009.  He and his wife, Diane, reside in Lewes, Delaware.
